i3’s Corrosion Protection team supports the Aviation and Missile Command, Corrosion Program Office (AMCOM CPO) as well as the Combat Capabilities Development Command Aviation & Missile Center, Weapons Development and Integration Directorate (CCDC AvMC WDI), Aerospace Materials Laboratory
The mission is to mitigate US Army corrosion losses currently identified as $1.9 billion annually. The members consist of materials and chemistry subject matter experts who average 20 years of experience solving coatings and corrosion protection problems. It provides the following support to the warfighter:
- Worldwide support to maintenance facilities through site observations and audits
- Field support to Sustainment Maintenance Groups in troubleshooting coatings and corrosion failures
- Writing, evaluation and revision of maintenance manuals, standards and specifications
- Supporting the AMCOM CPO in conducting the US Army Working Integrated Product Team (WIPT) on Painting Operations and Materials by holding quarterly conferences integrating all US Army stakeholders in mitigating corrosion through coating systems
- Reduction of chemical health hazards to warfighters
- Provide real time support to the warfighter
- Performance characterization of coating systems and component materials
- Development and establishment of corrosion testing protocols
